Maths

Mathematics at Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy

At Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy, our core belief is simple: every child can achieve in maths. We want our pupils to do more than access the curriculum—we want them to thrive. Our teachers guide children through carefully planned lessons while encouraging them to challenge themselves, develop resilience, and build confidence in their mathematical ability.

Mathematics is everywhere in life—from shopping to cooking, from planning a holiday to decorating a room. It is also essential for most careers. That’s why our mission is to ensure every child leaves Edenthorpe Hall with strong mathematical foundations and the confidence to apply them in real-world situations.

Teaching for Mastery at Edenthorpe Hall

We follow a Teaching for Mastery approach because we believe all children deserve a deep understanding of maths. This means:

  • Future learning is built on solid foundations that do not need to be re-taught.
  • No child is left behind – all pupils work on the same objective within the same lesson.
  • Children who might otherwise fall behind are supported quickly, narrowing gaps and raising attainment for all.

What Does Maths Teaching for Mastery Look Like at Edenthorpe Hall?

  • We reject the idea that some people ‘just can’t do maths’.
  • We promote a growth mindset: all pupils are encouraged to believe that hard work leads to success.
  • Lessons are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, with all pupils working together on the same content at the same time.
  • Children master concepts before moving on, ensuring no pupil is left behind.
  • If a pupil struggles, this is identified quickly and early intervention is provided.
  • Lessons are carefully designed to highlight new learning, key points, difficult concepts, and a clear, sequenced journey through the topic.
  • Significant time is spent developing deep knowledge of key ideas that underpin future learning.
  • Key facts, such as multiplication tables and addition facts within 10, are learnt to automaticity to avoid cognitive overload and free up working memory.

Our Aim

Every child at Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy should leave us as a confident, capable mathematician who enjoys problem-solving and understands the value of maths in everyday life.
