Physical Education
At Edenthorpe Hall, we are committed to delivering a high‑quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires all children to enjoy being active, develop confidence and build lifelong healthy habits.
Intent
We follow the Get Set for PE scheme, which is designed to:
- Provide a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Year 6.
- Enable children to build on their physical skills, understanding and confidence year on year.
- Offer a broad range of physical activities, including dance, gymnastics, ball skills, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities (OAA).
- Support children’s social, emotional and cognitive development through high-quality PE experiences.
PE Provision
- FS2 receive one PE lesson per week focused on developing fundamental movement skills through fun and engaging activities.
- Years 1–6 receive two PE lessons per week (see our curriculum map for more detail).
- Year 5 attend swimming lessons for one term, developing water confidence and working towards strong, safe swimming competency.
Physical Activity Beyond PE Lessons
We promote physical activity throughout the school day. Our trained Play Leaders support active and inclusive play at lunchtimes, ensuring children remain active, social and engaged.
Competitions and School Sport
We provide a broad range of competitive and non-competitive opportunities to help children build teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship. All pupils, including those who are less confident in sport, have opportunities to participate in inclusive festivals and events.

Impact
Through our PE curriculum, pupils:
- Understand why physical activity is important for their health and wellbeing.
- Secure fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping and throwing.
- Perform dances using a range of movements and patterns.
- Develop flexibility, control, strength and balance.
- Participate confidently in team games.
- Strive to achieve their personal best.
- Challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone.
- Strengthen their communication and teamwork skills.
We are proud to have achieved the Gold School Games Mark, demonstrating our commitment to high-quality PE and school sport.
Recent Achievements
- 96% of Year 5 pupils (2025 data) can swim 25m competently and confidently.
- 100% of Year 5 pupils can perform self-rescue and partner rescue in a range of water-based situations.
- Our Year 5/6 netball teams finished 4th at the 2025 Astrea competition.
- Our Year 4 basketball team placed 3rd at the 2026 School Games Hotshots competition.
