Reading & Phonics

Phonics at Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy

At Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves the best possible start on their reading journey. To make this happen, we use the highly successful Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme, created by Ruth Miskin. This approach is trusted by thousands of schools across the UK and is proven to help children become confident, fluent readers.

Why We Use Read Write Inc.Learning to read is one of the most important skills your child will ever master. The Government recommends teaching early reading through synthetic phonics—a method that teaches children to turn letters and letter groups into sounds and blend them together to make words. RWI gives our pupils the tools they need to succeed, using clear structure and regular assessment to ensure every child makes rapid progress.

What Your Child Will Learn

Through the RWI programme, children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and the letter or letter groups that represent them.
  • Use Fred Talk to blend sounds into words.
  • Read books that match the sounds they know, building confidence and fluency.
  • Recognise words quickly for speedy reading.
  • Show understanding by answering questions about what they’ve read.

How You Can Help at Home

  • Children in Reception who are learning Set 1 sounds and are not yet blending fluently will bring home sound sheets and a library book for you to share together.
  • Once they can blend and know the first 44 sounds, they’ll move on to Ditty sheets and then Red Ditty Books.
  • Please make time to read to your child every day. Hearing stories read aloud helps develop vocabulary, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.

When Your Child Brings Home an RWI BookBefore reading:

  1. Look at the Speed Sounds page.
  2. Review the Green and Red words.
  3. Check the Vocabulary page for understanding.

Your child will have practised this book several times in school. By the time it comes home, they should read it with fluency and expression and understand the story. Use the questions at the back to check comprehension.

Our Reading Leader is Mrs Kaur, who is always happy to answer any questions about your child’s reading journey. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
