Religious Education at Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy
Our Vision
At Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy, we believe Religious Education is a vital part of helping our pupils understand the diverse world they live in. Our approach is rooted in the lived experiences of our pupils, families, and local community, while reflecting the rich religious and non-religious diversity of the UK and beyond.
We recognise that while our national culture is often described as “Culturally Christian,” active understanding of Christianity may not be part of the lived experience for many of our pupils. Therefore, our RE curriculum is inclusive, relevant, and designed to help children navigate a complex and pluralistic society with respect and curiosity.
Intent
Our RE curriculum aims to:
- Teach pupils about Christianity and other major world religions represented in Great Britain.
- Explore religious and non-religious worldviews, helping pupils understand how beliefs influence life choices and behaviours.
- Promote social awareness, empathy, and respect for diversity.
- Encourage pupils to ask big questions, reflect on their own beliefs, and engage in meaningful discussions.
- Foster independent thinking through creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, and hands-on experiences.
We want our pupils to leave Edenthorpe Hall as thoughtful, compassionate individuals who can make informed judgements about religious and moral issues and contribute positively to society.
Implementation
We follow the Astrea Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, adapted to reflect our school community. The religions studied are:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
- Hinduism
- Non-religious worldviews
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
- Introduces Christianity and helps children develop a sense of self and belonging.
Key Stage 1 (KS1)
- Christianity studied in depth, with an introduction to Islam and Judaism.
Key Stage 2 (KS2)
- Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and non-religious worldviews explored in greater depth.
At Edenthorpe Hall, we value the diverse backgrounds of our pupils and staff and create a safe, respectful environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their experiences. Our lessons encourage open enquiry, discussion, and practical activities that make learning meaningful.
Impact
Through RE, our pupils:
- Develop an understanding of different religions and worldviews.
- Make connections between their own lives and those of others locally and globally.
- Appreciate cultural diversity and learn to respect different ways of life.
- Become informed, empathetic individuals prepared for life in an ever-changing world.
RE at Edenthorpe Hall is more than a subject—it’s a vital part of preparing our pupils to thrive in a diverse society.
